We live in a wasteful society where everything seemingly has become a disposable item and the resources of our planet are dwindling at an alarming rate. Over the last 10-20 years governments across the world are waking up to these facts, and every year new legislation comes into force to encourage us to re-use or recycle. In an attempt to reduce the amount of finite materials we remove from this Earth of ours.
To us, genuine recycling is to process these discarded materials instead of being buried or burnt as fuel.Thereby promoting recycled products that lead to greater savings for business and the environment.
The Problem
The production and use of plastics has a range of envoirmental impacts. Firstly, plastics production requires significant quantities of resources, primarily fossil fuels, both as a raw material and to deliver energy for the manufacturering process. It is estimated that 4% of the world's annual oil production is used as feedstock for plastics production and an additional 3-4% during manufacturing.
The Solution
A report on the production of carrier bags made from recycled rather than virgin polythene concluded that the use of recycled plastic resulted in the following environmental benefits:
- Reduction of energy consumption by two-thirds
- Production of only a third of the sulphur dioxide and half of the nitrous oxide
- Reduction of water usage by nearly 90%
- Reduction of carbon dioxide generation by two-and-a half times
A different study concluded that 1.8 tons of oil is saved for every tonne of recycled polythene produced.
